Healing the Ocean With a Garden of Coral

Coral are the backbone of the whole tropical ecosystem and if they disappear we’re in a lot of trouble says Ken Nedimeyer, founder of the Coral Restoration Foundation. The pseudo-farmer has spent a lot of time in the water and has seen too many coral die, so he plants coral in an offshore nursery near the Florida Keys and replants them on reefs. Stranded in Japan, An Unforgettable Act of Kindness

When writer Matthew Treadwell was preparing for a trip to Japan with his wife, he anticipated an amazing travel experience. What he did not expect was a random act of kindness that would change his life. While visiting a quaint countryside village, Treadwell and his wife lost track of time. They realized too late that they had missed the last bus back to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. Amid pounding rain and increasing panic, the couple ran out of ideas. That’s when a friendly stranger stepped in to help and treated them to an experience they would never forget. This Great Big Story is a paid contribution by ANA. (http://cnn.com/actsofkindness). The Reason Why Your Doughnut Box is Pink

If you grew up in California, enjoyed a sweet treat on the American West Coast, or just watched movies or sitcoms based in L.A., you may have noticed something very particular—all the doughnut boxes are pink. Why? It’s all thanks to Ted Ngoy, a Cambodian refugee who came to the States in the 1970s. After opening up his first doughnut shop, Ngoy used pink boxes to package the baked goods. As his business grew, he began to train and mentor other doughnut moguls, all of whom carried on Ngoy’s tradition with matching pink boxes. Today, Mayly Tao, the reigning Doughnut Princess of L.A., keeps her great-uncle’s legacy alive at DK’s Donuts—adding her own modern twist. Why NASA is Tracking Greenland's Ice Melt

Greenland’s Inuit people have been living on the ice for thousands of years, but in the winter of 1963, they noticed glaciers melting in the winter for the first time. Decades later, a team of NASA scientists would be the first to prove that Greenland’s ice sheet was, in fact, melting. Now, during a time of unprecedented change in the Earth’s climate, NASA’s Operation IceBridge scientists are gathering data in Greenland to help the world understand how ice melt impacts people around the globe—most dramatically—by extreme weather events like the hurricanes of 2017.
